History
Founded in 1993, the Friends of Arts Education at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts strives to make the performing arts accessible to young people without regard to socio-economic, geographic, or intellectual barriers, both real and perceived .
Our first year of operation was simple; we subsidized tickets for 800 students to attend events at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.
Over the last ten years, the Friends education program has grown to serve over 120,000 students, teachers and families each year throughout southern California. There are currently more than twenty-two regional school districts as well as private and home schools benefiting from our Friends program - in classrooms and at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. |

Friends Educational Outreach Program
Daytime Educational Performances at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts are the core of our program and are intended to expose students of all ages to, and educate them about, the disciplines of the performing arts. To assist educators in preparing students for their upcoming theatre experience, the Friends provides curriculum materials and ideas of each show through Professional Development Workshops. After the performances, educators can ask for the Friends to send a professional artist into the classroom to interact with students in a more informal setting. This Artists in the Classroom program offers hands-on opportunities for young people to participate in an experience that coordinates with students’ theatre experience.
After performances, the Friends receive thousands of thank you letters and pieces of artwork from students who have attended our education programs and/or spent time with our Artists in the Classroom. The very best of this work is recognized with certificates and prizes at our annual Creative Expressions Awards Ceremony. |
